Psi Chi

Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, was founded in 1929 with the purpose of encouraging academic excellence and advancement of psychology.

The Iowa State University chapter of Psi Chi, chartered in 1929, was one of the first initiated in the country. Our chapter is one of 1,090 across the USA, Canada, and Ireland.

Member qualifications and Application

  • Applications for membership in PSI CHI, The International Honor Society in Psychology are taken each semester.
  • Fall 2016 application deadline is October 14 by 5 p.m.
  • Applications can be picked-up in W022 Lago or printed and dropped off at the PSI CHI Mailbox in W113 Lago.

Minimum qualifications for membership:

  1. Completion (not including current semester) of 3 semesters of college course work
  2. Completion (not including current semester) of 1 semester at ISU
  3. Completion (not including current semester) of 9 semester hours of psychology
  4. Major or minor standing in psychology
  5. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 and rank in upper 35% of class
  6. Psychology GPA of at least 3.00
  7. High standards of personal behavior
  8. Two-thirds affirmative vote of those present at a regular meeting of the chapter.

Once you have been informed by e-mail of your acceptance into the ISU Chapter of Psi Chi, you must complete a Membership Acceptance Form. Please drop off this form in the Psi Chi mailbox in W113 Lago.

Psi Chi Officer Position Descriptions

  • Collect and distribute all mail
  • Make sure that all events and

Vice President

  • Take over the presidents’ duties when the president is absent
  • Reserve rooms
  • Participate in meeting planning
  • Arrange food for meetings
  • Oversee banquet preparations
  • Send thank-yous to speakers that attend our meetings


  • Arrange for vouchers, reimbursements, etc
  • Collect and deposit membership checks
  • Maintain membership list
  • Participate in meeting planning


  • Advertise for meetings and events
  • Take minutes for meetings
  • Maintain member email list
  • Provide minutes to webmaster for web posting
  • Participate in meeting planning

Social Chair

  • Organize VEISHA events
  • Help with banquet preparations
  • Participate in meeting planning
  • Facilitate any social activities
  • Head up a service project


  • Take and develop pictures
  • Maintain a visual record of Psi Chi
  • Select and send photos to the national office and webmaster
  • Participate in meeting planning


  • Keep website updated with meeting times, places, deadlines, etc.
  • Continually search for helpful links to add to website
